Match Report
Our women’s side headed on their first away day of the SWFL Central-West season, travelling down the A82 to face Drumchapel Utd. Gerry Gallacher’s side had fell to defeat in their opening match against Cumbernauld Utd last week and were looking to get on the board against a Drum side they had defeated 6-0 at Mountblow in the ScottishPower Regional League Cup’s group stage.
We welcomed back Natasha Lewis and Lucia Sereno in defence as well as Caitlyn Connelly to the bench after the trio missed the opening match. The ladies started strongly but were unable to convert chances into goals in the first half.
That would change early in the second period, when Mya Logan threaded a lovely ball through to top scorer Gemma Russell, she took the ball down well and finished over the goalkeeper with a delightful chip for her ninth goal in just 5 matches in all competitions.
We would push for that crucial second goal amid some feisty challenges, but it would not be forthcoming, and near the death Drumchapel would beat Kira Swallow in goal to ensure a share of the points at Donald Dewar.
Post-match Gerry Gallacher said: “It was a game of two halves.
“We were winning the midfield battle in the first half legally and technically – which was a big part of our game plan but they were not supported by their team mates or the referee in first half.
“We had full on support across the team in second half, especially from Gemma Russell who played her opponents at their own game and won hands down.
“We took the game to Drumchapel, ramped up the tempo and took the lead, then chased and failed to convert a second.
“Towards very end girls paid the price as they allowed Drumchapel to force themselves forward, get a corner or two, and equalise.
“However, despite dropping two points, a lacklustre first half, and the end of the match to one side, the players second half performance was impressive and if we start next week with the same tempo we’ll do well.
Next up for the Daughters of the Rock is a ScottishPower Regional League Cup first knockout round match at home to the University of Edinburgh, this match will be played next Sunday, October 26 at Mountblow, with a kick-off at 1:45pm.
