Match Report

We kicked off our KDM Evolution Trophy league phase this evening at the Rock, welcoming St Mirren’s B team.

After announcing a co-operation agreement with the Buddies over the summer and hosting them at the Marbill Coaches Stadium in June for a friendly, this was another chance to strengthen the relationship between the clubs.

Youngster Derin Marshall was handed his debut from the start, while fellow Dumbarton youth prospects Dean Connor and Aedan Gilfedder took places on the bench.

On-loan Buddies Carrick McEvoy, Thomas Falconer, and Theo McCormick were all ineligible for either side in this competition. The trio will instead feature for St Mirren’s second string in their remaining matches.

The Sons got the game underway, but it was St Mirren who created the first chance, Jalmaro Calvin finding space in the box and firing low, only for Ollie Ecrepont to tip his effort wide.

Kristian Webster, making his second debut for the Sons, was forced off early with a knock, while Scott Tomlinson went close with a glancing header from a Ryan Blair free kick.

Tomlinson would get another opportunity and take it. A loose pass was stolen off a St Mirren defender’s foot by the on-loan winger, who curled a lovely strike around Ryan Mullen in the Buddies’ goal to give the Sons the advantage.

The Sons doubled their advantage when Chris Johnston reacted quickest to an Ally Roy flick-on, slotting past Mullen with a composed left-foot finish, his first goal since returning to football this summer.

Stevie Farrell made two changes at the break, introducing Dom Docherty and Kai Kirkpatrick for Roy and Tomlinson.

Despite a bright start to the second half from the hosts, St Mirren pulled one back before the hour. Flynn O’Brien’s cross from the left was met by Evan Mooney, who finished neatly at the near post.

The Sons restored their two-goal cushion just minutes later. Scott Honeyman showed great skill on the right to beat his marker, and although his cutback took a deflection into the air, it dropped perfectly for tonight’s skipper Tony Wallace to nod home and make it 3–1.

The visitors would cut the gap again an excellent free kick from Fraser Taylor was curled around the Sons wall and went in off the inside of the post.

Both sides would push for a late goal and the Sons would find it, a great cross from Johnston out on the left was met by the onrushing Dom Docherty who tapped it home to secure all three points at the Rock in our first league phase match.

Attention now turns back to league action as we welcome Elgin City to Dumbarton this Saturday.
