Dumbarton’s pre-season concluded this afternoon in an exciting 3-3 draw with Queen of the South.

The visitors had the benefit of the wind at their backs in the opening 45-minutes with Sons finding it difficult to get out of their own half for short periods throughout. 

Reece Lyon came closest to opening the scoring for Queen’s with one effort from 25-yards well pushed behind by Shay Kelly before the same man glanced a header just off target after a deep cross to the far post.

At the other end, Ayr United loanee Scott Tomlinson was causing problems for the opposition down the right and Gordon Walker perhaps should have tested the goalkeeper from 12-yards when a cross fell kindly for him.

The game exploded to life in the second period when Dumbarton were awarded a penalty when Trialist 16 was fouled by the visiting Trialist goalkeeper, allowing Tony Wallace to step up and emphatically find the net from the spot.

The lead only lasted a matter of minutes when Trialist 9 nodded in for the visitors on 50 minutes and he quickly added a second 60 seconds later. 

Sons were suddenly chasing the game but were level on the hour when Ryan Blair curled in a free-kick and led on 64 minutes after Ally Roy smashed the ball home from an indirect free-kick after a pass back from the Doonhamers.

Kelly was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the closing stages and it looked as if he was going to go empty to secure a win for his side only for Lyon was to earn a draw with almost the last kick of the game with a powerful strike from the edge of the box.

Sons are back in action next Tuesday when the Premier Sports Cup kicks off with the visit of Stirling Albion.
