Dumbarton marked their return to League One football with a 1-1 draw at Inverness Caledonian Thistle on the opening day of the 2024/25 season.

The two sides were coming into the clash on the back of very different 2023/24 campaigns as the Highlanders suffered relegation from the Championship whilst Sons earned promotion from League Two, both via the play-offs.

It was a familiar looking side from Dumbarton boss Stevie Farrell with just one player making his league debut for the club from the start in the shape of Mouhamed Niang.

Fellow summer arrivals Matty Shiels and Michael Miller are also new faces from the side that ended the following campaign, but had previously appeared for the club in past seasons.

The hosts were in control of possession throughout the first-half with Sons failing to get their foot on the ball and string together a number of passes.

Dumbarton’s only real sight of goal came in the opening minutes when James Hilton created space following a quick corner routine, but he bent his shot off target.

Duncan Ferguson’s side continued to dictate play but without putting too much pressure on the visiting backline, who seemed happy to soak up the pressure.

Chances for ICT were few and far between with Charlie Gilmour having the first effort on goal when the ball dropped kindly following a corner, but Brett Long reacted to make a smart block.

Adam MacKinnon then found himself in a promising area but couldn’t find the target just after the half-hour, and despite all of the dominance from the home side, it looked as if the teams would head in level.

That was until just a minute before the break when Danny Devine peeled away from his marker following a corner and headed in at the back post to put the home side in front.

A reaction was needed after the break from Dumbarton with Farrell introducing Carlo Pignatiello in place of Tony Wallace which also resulted in a change of shape to a 3-5-2 formation.

The changes made an immediate impact with Sons on the front foot from the off as Kalvin Orsi drifted in from the right and looked for the near corner only to be denied by Jack Newman.

The visitors got the equaliser they deserved just before the hour mark when a quick throw from Finlay Gray allowed him space to swing in an inviting cross that was met by half-time substitute Pignatiello to slam into the net.

The goal seemed to kick the hosts back into the life who had more than one close call in front of goal, with Calum MacLeod missing the target before Billy McKay cannoned a shot off the crossbar.

Dumbarton were forced to play the final 10 minutes, plus added time, a man down after Niang was shown his second yellow card of the afternoon following an aerial duel with Gilmour.

That resulted in Sons being forced to change their shape yet again with attackers Michael Ruth and Hilton replaced by the more defensive minded Ryan Blair and Cammy Clark.

Joel Mumbongo had also come on for the visitors not long before the red card and he remained Dumbarton’s main attacking outlet.

The former Burnley forward was sent through on goal by Clark but the angle was slightly against him and he couldn’t find a way past Newman, who got a strong hand to his strike that was headed for the far corner.

The home side ended the contest on the front foot as they looked to make the most of their man advantage with a strong save from Long denying Gilmour’s deflected effort from the edge of the box before collecting the resulting corner that allowed his side to relax and start the season with a hard-fought point.

Sons host Alloa Athletic in their first home game of the leagye season at the Marbill Coaches Stadium on matchday 2.
