Joel Mumbongo returned to haunt Dumbarton with the winner as Sons fell to defeat at Galabank.

The big forward struck the only goal of the game 11 minutes from time, sending the Sons fans who had made the long journey down the M74 home empty-handed.

In filthy conditions, it took until the 20th minute for the first real chance of note to arrive.

Dumbarton skipper Mark Durnan caught out the Annan rearguard with a ball over the top, that sent both Ally Roy and Scott Tomlinson clear – but a miscommunication saw the two players collide, with Tomlinson then sending a fizzing drive over from the edge of the area.

At the other end, Galabankies forward Tam Muir did superbly to send a stooping header from Max Kilsby’s cross goalwards, but the swirling ball was touched onto the bar by Brett Long in the Dumbarton goal.

Two golden chances then came and went for the Sons.

First Kristian Webster’s surging run from inside his own half was only ended by some brave goalkeeping from Annan stopper Charlie Albinson, before Ali Omar found acres of space at the far post to get on the end of a deep Kai Kirkpatrick delivery – but saw his low effort scrambled off the line by the perfectly placed Keith Watson.

More good play from Sons then saw the stretching Aaron Brown unable to turn in Scott Tomlinson’s delivery, before the hosts ended the half by showing their threat – as Ryan Muir sent a low drive from range past the far post.

The second-half started with another superb opening for Sons, and for defender Omar.

This time Ryan Blair’s corner was met by the Somalia international, who glanced the ball goalwards from point-blank range – only to be denied by a sharp hand from Albinson.

After that the game settled into a lull, with the conditions deteriorating and neither keeper facing any action of note. A raft of changes for both sides saw Jack Duncan and Adam Livingstone introduced for the Sons, but it was a Dumbarton old boy – brought off the bench for Annan – who would make the decisive contribution.

Joel Mumbongo found space to meet Darryl Carrick’s delivery, and squeezed the ball beyond Long at his near post.

There was still time for Sons to create one final chance however, as top scorer Leighton McIntosh took a great touch to steady himself on the edge of the area – but lashed over, as Dumbarton suffered a third straight defeat.
