DUMBARTON lost 3-2 in the first round of the new SPFL Trust Trophy competition tonight.
Hosts and tenants met face to face as Sons played Lowland League side Rangers ‘B’ at the Rock.
Full back Pat Boyle made a long-awaited return to the line-up after injury, Andy Geggan started in midfield, and the new on loan signing from Hearts, young striker Ryan Schiavone, was on the bench.
Both sides showed promise in the first 20 minutes, but then winger Jake Hastie shot low into the net from the edge of the area to open the scoring for the black-shirted Gers. Five minutes later Alex Lowry added their second from close range.
Ross MacLean, Geggan and Gregor Buchanan (pictured) came close for Sons, but half-time arrived with no further scoring.
Early in the second half MacLean headed over from a Stuart Carswell cross, then Carlo Pigniatello had a shot beaten away by the keeper. At the other end keeper Callum Erskine did well to save from Charlie McCann.
In the 56th minute Paul Paton and Schiavone made their Sons debuts, replacing Edin Lynch and Carswell, then Callum Wilson and Kris Syvertsen came on for Kalvin Orsi and David Hopkirk. Finally Eoghan Stokes replaced MacLean.
Gers striker Tony Weston made it 3-0, then Sons pulled a goal back through Gregor Buchanan (pictured) after a great cross from Wilson. Another Wilson cross enabled Stokes to narrow the gap in the 88th minute.
