FINE WIN FOR SONS OVER TON

Saturday 1st April 2017

DUMBARTON secured a vital three points at the Rock this afternoon, showing tremendous fight to claim a 1-0 victory over Greenock Morton.

In a feisty first 45 minutes ‘Ton had more of the play, but Sons enjoyed some important attacking moments – particularly towards the end of the half.

On 35 minutes there was a let-off for Dumbarton when Lawrence Shankland smashed the ball against the crossbar.

At the other end Andy Stirling, Gregor Buchanan and Sam Stanton went agonisingly close for the home side.

Morton came steaming out of the traps immediately after the break, striking the woodwork once again.

But Sons kept their heads, and just before the hour found their labours rewarded.

Lewis Vaughan put Sons ahead as he nipped in at the back post to fire across Derek Gaston and into the net.

The pressure was relentless from the Greenock side in the last ten minutes. Sons rode their luck a little, but also held their cool and defended solidly.

Sonstrust Man of the Match was goalscorer Lewis Vaughan, who was replaced by debutant Joe Nuttall on 77 Minutes.

The win keeps Dumbarton on track to secure safety in the Ladbrokes SPFL Championship, with five crucial games remaining.
