DUMBARTON claimed a thoroughly deserved victory against Dundee United at the YOUR Radio 203FM Stadium this afternoon, fighting back twice to win 3-2.
Sons got off to a great start against the side holding second place in the Championship, going ahead on just 12 minutes.
Andy Stirling’s ball to the back post was helped back across goal by Tom Walsh and then scrambled in for 1-0 in by Callum Gallagher.
The final ten minutes of the opening 45 was nervy, but apart from that, it was a solid, forward-pressing first half performance from Dumbarton.
United came out fighting after the break, and five minutes in Anthony Ralston arrived at the back post to nod a sweet in-swinging cross past Scott Gallacher to make it 1-1.
Sons pushed back aggressively. On 59 minutes Craig Barr met a corner and nodded it down into the ground and on into the net to reclaim a 2-1 lead.
Eleven minutes later the men from Tannadice were level again. The ball was drilled across goal and Scott McDonald sprinted in and tapped home to make it 2-2.
Sons were simply not for letting go, however. Up rose Craig Barr to head home for 3-2 after a fabulous cross from David Wilson.
In the closing minutes Dumbarton defended with determination to secure a morale boosting win.
Next up for Sons is a trip down the road to take on Greenock Morton on Tuesday night.
