FINE WIN FOR DUMBARTON AT PETERHEAD

Saturday 16th July 2022

DUMBARTON have registered their first win in the Premier Sports Cup for three years today, winning 2-0 away to Peterhead in their third sectional match of the season.

A cagey opening to the game saw Peterhead arguably go closest in the opening exchanges, with debuting goalkeeper Harry Broun doing well to push a shot wide.

But Sons got into the game and opened the scoring on 23 minutes when Joe McKee sent Finlay Gray (pictured) through to score on his first start with a nicely-chipped finish.

Right on half time, another blow was applied to Peterhead when their defender Paul Dixon was dismissed for a foul on the edge of the box. The resulting free kick came to nothing.

After a towsy start to the second half which saw a further three players booked, chances were at a premium at either end.

However, with 20 minutes left, Gregor Buchanan crashed home a header from a Gregg Wylde cross to make it 2-0 to Sons.

The victory was a just reward for the efforts of players and fans who have covered nearly 700 miles this week for the ties at Aberdeen and Peterhead.

Dumbarton will play their final match of the group stage at home to Raith Rovers on Tuesday evening, kick-off 7.45pm.

Raith have been beaten on penalties by Stirling Albion after a 1-1 draw in the other game to be played in the group today.
