DUMBARTON clocked up a deserved 1-0 win against Dundee United at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium this afternoon, putting on a determined, creative display.
The visitors dominated the early possession, but as the half continued Sons started to press forward with a 4-4-2 formation.
On 39 minutes the best opportunity of the first half fell to Dumbarton. The ball dropped at Gregor Buchanan’s from a corner, but his shot skewered high over the bar.
Sons came flying out of the block after the break, with three quick chances in succession – the best one falling to Robert Thomson.
Then after a Ryan Stevenson free kick crashed the crossbar from 18 yards out, Dumbarton deservedly went in front.
A foul on Buchanan set up a spot kick for Mark Docherty on 54 minutes. His firmly struck penalty put Sons in front, to the delight of the vocal home support.
Dundee United pushed back hard into the final quarter hour, but Dumbarton contained them well and mounted a series of effective counter attacks, holding on for a famous victory.
The Sonstrust Man of the Match was goalscorer Mark Docherty, who had been moved to a more central position for this game.
