SONS development squad couldn’t build on last week’s league win against Annan Ath as they disappointingly lost to Ayr Utd last night.
The game, played at Auchenhowie’s Murray Park complex, was an entertaining affair and despite the 2-0 reverse, Dumbarton’s young side showed plenty promise.
Ayr took the lead on 11 minutes when neat footwork in the Sons 18-yard area from an Honest Man striker saw his shot nestle in the bottom right-hand corner of keeper Josh Lumsden’s goal.
On the half-hour Utd thought they had scored again, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Andy Biddulph had a great chance late into the second half to draw Sons level, but some top class defending preserved the away team’s lead.
And with the game entering the closing stages, Ayr struck again with a long-range effort to seal the win.
