HE watched some of Dumbarton’s biggest fixtures in recent years from the bench.
Now he wants to be part of other massive fixtures – in the club’s 150th year.
David Wilson is back at Sons, eager to be part of what he hopes will be an immediate return to cinch League One.
He is the first new signing to check into the club during this close season, but he’s not completely new.
He can say he was part of the squad which reached a cup final. And scored to help get them there, against Connah’s Quay Nomads in round two of the 2017/18 Challenge Cup.
He also enjoyed THAT night in Oswestry, and THAT day at McDiarmid Park, in the final two stages of the campaign.
But he had to do it from the bench, from start to finish, on each of those two matchdays.
Since his first spell with the club, David has been playing in cinch League Two for Annan Athletic, Stirling Albion and, last season, Albion Rovers.
After a good 2021/22 season with the Coatbridge side, he reckons he’s ready to help Dumbarton succeed again.
Speaking to dumbartonfootballclub.com, David said: “It’s good to be back. Obviously it’s a different league and a different manager, but I am looking forward to it, and I’ve played under the manager before at Stranraer.
“One hundred per cent, I’m coming back a better player than I left.
“I’m coming back having played in League Two probably most of my career, and it will be good back here.
“It’s going to be a hard league next year but with the squad we are going to get together, I think we can do well.
“I enjoyed playing for Albion Rovers last year. It was hard with the circumstances, but we should have done better than we did.
“On a personal level, I think I performed well for them.
“I didn’t play at Oswestry or in the cup final, but it was good to be around the place when we played those games.
“It was gutting in the end that we didn’t win the cup, especially as I thought we played well in the final.
“It was a mistake that cost us, but the run-up to the final, and with what it was like to be involved, it was good.”
David knows that there will be other teams in cinch League Two with aspirations of performing well in season 2022/23.
But with that being the club’s 150th year, he definitely hopes that Dumbarton can be among them.
He added: “There are some good players signed up from last year, and with the players we are going to sign, it’s going to be good to be part of it.
“I think we should be doing well. We should be up there for the playoffs at least, and see what happens from there.
“But 100 per cent, everybody in the league this year is going to think they have a chance of winning it.
“It’s going to be tough but we can only look at ourselves and think: ‘can we do it?’. We will just take it one game at a time.”
