DUMBARTON secured their place in the fourth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup tonight, beating Championship rivals Alloa Athletic 5-0 at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium.
What turned out to be an emphatic win began with a goal in the opening few seconds, as Donald McCallum put Sons ahead through a low drive from 20 yards out.
On 14 minutes it was 2-0 for Sons. Kevin Cawley went on a lengthy run, switching to Grant Gallagher — whose low cross was turned in efficiently by Garry Fleming.
There were no further goals added in the first half. Alloa started the second period brightly, but Dumbarton came back into the game and there were chances at both ends, with Mark Brown making a couple of important stops.
On 78 minutes Jordan Kirkpatrick put the tie beyond any doubt, finishing brilliantly with a shot into the top corner which made it 3-0 and sent Sons flying into the next round of the Cup.
While the fans were cheering, there was still more to come. On the brink of full time, Kirkpatrick drove on goal after capitalising on a defensive slip, squaring the ball to Calum Waters for Dumbarton’s fourth.
Sons went nap two minutes into time added on when Kirkpatrick popped up again for a fifth goal, grabbing the ball off Docherty and finishing at the near post.
The result means that the mighty DFC now face Queen of the South in the next round of the competition.
Next up for Dumbarton is an important home game in the SPFL Championship against St Mirren in a few days time, on Saturday 12th December.
