CONGRATULATIONS TO CHRIS

Monday 1st March 2021

THERE were ex-Sons players in each camp in yesterday’s Betfred Cup final, and it was Chris Kane who came out celebrating as St Johnstone lifted the trophy.

The Perth Saints striker was on loan to Dumbarton for most of 2014, in two separate spells under the management of Ian Murray.

He played 30 games for the club and scored 15 goals, having found the net at least once in all of his first five fixtures.

Leaving Hampden with runners-up medals yesterday were Livingston duo Nicky Devlin and Alan Lithgow, who also have served Sons. Alan was injured and unable to play yesterday.

We reckon (but are open to corrections) that Chris’s triumph makes him the first player to lift the League Cup having previously played for Sons since Murdo MacLeod did so with Hibernian in 1991.

Some players have come to Dumbarton having previously lifted the trophy, such as Lee Mair and Kyle Hutton.

David Van Zanten was the last former Sons player who has lifted the trophy at all, doing so with St Mirren in 2013 – the year before he joined us. Danny Handling has also been an unused sub in a final with Hibernian prior to being a Dumbarton player.

Congratulations to Chris, and commiserations to Nicky and Alan.
