DUMBARTON went down to a second Betfred Cup defeat this afternoon, losing 3-2 to Clyde in Cumbernauld.
Ross Forbes got the game underway at Broadwood, in the same stadium where it all ended for lockdown 31 weeks ago.
Inside 10 minutes the home side were ahead. There was not much Sons ‘keeper Dabrowski could do, as Cuddihy’s effort from distance flew into the top corner.
Ten minutes later McGeever brought down the Bully Wee’s Goodwillie in the penalty area. The striker stepped up to convert the spot kick for 2-0 to Clyde.
On 27 minutes, Dumbarton struck back. There was great composure from Hamilton as he made his way into the box, cut in off the right-hand side and finished past Mitchell to give Sons a way back.
The lifeline did not last long, however. Just on half-time Cunningham finished well to restore the two goal margin for Clyde.
Sons enjoyed more possession in the second half than they did throughout the first.
Their efforts were rewarded on 54 minutes as Jones’ unmarked header from Forbes’ corner squirmed over the line for 3-2.
But try as they may, Dumbarton could not find an equaliser. And right at the close of the match Hamilton was shown a red card for a challenge on the far side of the park.
