CLUB STATEMENT – DELAY TO RETURN OF SUPPORTERS

Thursday 10th September 2020

DUMBARTON FC has noted the decision of Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to delay the indicative date for the return of supporters to football stadiums until at least 5th October.

We fully understand why this decision has been taken. Public health must be the top priority and the Covid-19 infection rate of recent days suggests that the risk of catching the virus has increased.

Indeed, our own West Dunbartonshire Council area has been under new restrictions for more than a week, due to an increase in positive cases.

However, with the return of fans now delayed further, the coming weeks will be vital for Scottish football at large, and especially for Dumbarton FC.

We are keen for supporters to be allowed to return to fixtures, even if it is in limited numbers, as soon as it is feasible.

Since the start of Covid-19 restrictions in March, our fans, sponsors, directors and business and community partners have worked tirelessly to ensure priceless income for the club.

However, by far the most profitable method of raising income is the influx of supporters on a home matchday.

This is to say nothing of the atmosphere which is generated by supporters, and the difference that our fans can make to the fortunes of our team.

The next review of restrictions by the Scottish Government will take place by Thursday 1st October at the latest. This pre-dates our first competitive fixture, at home to Dunfermline Athletic in the Betfred Cup on Tuesday 6th October.

We urge our supporters, and the general public, to adhere to Scottish Government guidance to protect the health of the public, and to enhance the possibility that fans can be allowed into games as soon as possible.

We cannot wait to have our supporters back at the C&G Systems Stadium, but this hinges on the guidance of the Government, which is dictated by positive case numbers.

Hopefully the country will see a decrease in these to some extent, and there will be better news by the time of the Government’s next review of restrictions.

We also hope and trust that our supporters are in good health and spirits, and are looking forward to the new season. Thank you very much for your continued support.
