CHRIS JOHNSTON RETURNS
We are delighted to confirm that Chris Johnston has returned to Dumbarton after seven years away.
Chris spent the 2017/18 season with the club as a 23-year-old after impressing during a trial period and played 14 times for the club and returns looking to make many more for the Sons.
Chris, now 30, began his career with Kilmarnock, making over 60 appearances in the Premiership and in the Championship with Raith Rovers before his first spell at the Rock. He has since gone on to play for Peterhead, Clyde, Stranraer and has had two spells with Annan Athletic, gaining experience across all levels of the Scottish leagues.
A former Scotland under 19’s international Chris will bring a wealth of experience to the club that he has gained since his first departure, as well as a wand of a left foot and offer a threat from both wings.
Speaking upon his return Chris said that he felt he had ‘unfinished business’ at the Rock and spoke about what sort of changes he’s made as a player since he first debuted for the club.
He said:” I’m delighted to be back; I was a young boy back then. I’ve played a lot of games since then and I’m definitely a different player.
“Last time I was young, and it was my first time going part-time, so it was a new environment for me. But this time I’ve played a lot of games in these leagues, so I know them inside out and I’m just looking forward to getting started again.”
Chris also spoke of his goals for the upcoming season saying: “I think as a squad, you want to try and finish as high as you can, especially in League Two.
“You’d like to think everything’s going to be competitive, so it’s who puts a run together.
“Personally, it’s just to play and contribute to the team, whether that’s goals or assists.
“The main thing is for the club to be in a good position, and that we try to get up the league.
“We’ve proven before that we can go up from this league, so there’s no reason why that can’t happen this year.”
Manager Stevie Farrell spoke of his relief upon signing a player that had caused his side so many problems in recent years.
He said:” Chris caused us so many problems when he played against us for Annan that year they were promoted ahead of ourselves.
“He is a player I’ve always admired, he was here previously of course but for me that is irrelevant, I’m just excited to get working with him, he’s someone I’ve tried to get before on two or three occasions both here and during my time at Stranraer.
“I know other boys in the squad who’ve played against him also rate him very highly and overall I’m just very pleased to get him in.”
