BUILD-UP CONTINUES AT CLIFTONHILL

Wednesday 23rd September 2020

DUMBARTON’S third pre-season friendly ahead of the 2020/21 campaign took place tonight away to League Two Albion Rovers.

The game ended in a 3-2 victory for Sons in a game where other tactical options were explored, with the new season now less than two weeks away.

It was a makeshift Sons defence which started, with full backs Sam Wardrop and Rico Quitongo absent. Their absences were precautionary after knocks in previous games.

Robert Jones headed Dumbarton in front after 23 minutes, finishing off a Ross Forbes cross.

And five minutes later he had his and Sons’ second goal, this time with a tap-in.

After 36 minutes it was 3-0, and having already set a goal up, Forbes had one of his own in spectacular style.

Having spotted the keeper off his line, he applied a fine lobbed finish to extend Sons’ lead.

The teams went in at half time with Sons firmly in command, and changes started to be made in the second half.

However, on the hour mark, Albion Rovers pulled a goal back, and within a further six minutes they had another, putting Dumbarton under pressure to retain their lead.

The mini-revival by the Coatbridge men was successfully staved off and the first half goal rush proved to be enough for Sons to register their second victory of pre-season.

Friendly matches will continue in the build-up to the new season. However, all matches remain strictly behind closed doors and no details of them will be broadcast until after they have finished.

Dumbarton: Dabrowski; Carswell, McGeever, Neill, A Trialist, McCluskey, Langan, Wedderburn, B Trialist, Forbes, Jones. Subs (all used): C Trialist; Johnstone, D Trialist, Crossan.
