DUMBARTON gave a spirited performance at Aberdeen tonight, but the cinch Premiership side proved too strong and prevailed with a 2-0 victory in the Premier Sports Cup group match.
As expected, the Dons were well on top in terms of possession, but a workmanlike effort kept them out until the late stages of the first half.
Then, on 36 minutes, ex-Sons defender Ross McCrorie flicked the ball past keeper Brett Long (pictured) to give the home side the lead.
Aberdeen could very well have added to their lead before they did so just before the hour mark, Matty Kennedy rounding Long and applying the finish.
But the Dumbarton heads never dropped and Ally Love went close to pulling one back, only to be denied by a fine save from the keeper.
It was Long who was kept the busiest, though, and he did brilliantly to push away a shot to deny the Dons a late third.
Having had a long night tonight, Sons have an even longer journey on Saturday when they travel to face Peterhead at Balmoor Stadium in the third group game.
They then conclude the campaign on Tuesday evening at home to Raith Rovers.
Our two forthcoming opponents have met at Stark’s Park tonight in the other sectional match, with Raith 6-0 winners.
