BATTLING WIN FOR SONS OVER CALEY

Saturday 23rd September 2017

TWO second half goals reversed a first half deficit to give Dumbarton a fine, hard fought win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle at the YOUR Radio 103FM Stadium this afternoon.

After a slow start from both teams Connor Bell gave the visitors the lead on eight minutes, sliding the ball past past Scott Gallacher after some hesitant defending.

Caley moved the ball well and kept possession, but generally lacked end product. Sons applied pressure at the end of the first half, but only looked like causing danger from two good Dimitrios Froxylias free kicks from the edge of the area.

Indeed it was Froxy who grabbed Dumbarton’s equaliser two minutes after the break, slicing home with an exquisite volley from eight yards out.

On 62 minutes Sons were in front. Again it was Froxylias who helped inflict the damage. His swerving free kick was well stopped by Owain Fon-Williams in the Inverness goal, but Sam Wardrop was on hand with a clinical finish from the rebound to make it 2-1.

The tide turned again when the visitors’ central defender Gary Warren was red carded for simulation and arguing on 79 minutes.

Caley upped the pace, looking to strike back, but Sons held firm and tried to extend their lead on the break.

Dimitrios Froxylias was chosen as Sonstrust Man of the Match to considerable acclaim, but it was a thorough team performance in the second half that ensured the victory.
