League 2 football returns to The Rock this weekend, and home fans will notice a striking new addition to the home concourse.
Local artist Lewis Deeney has created a stunning mural that brings our iconic badge to life, working in partnership with DFC and the Dumbarton Football Club Community Trust.
Lewis explained: “After attending Dumbarton Rocks Festival I was inspired by the club’s new community building approach of embracing local creativity. I wanted to get involved and as an artist, creating an artwork for the club was the obvious choice.
“Working on a mural allows me to work on a large scale, and the home concourse had many large blank walls calling out for some colour.
“I created two murals, one brought the club’s badge to life, focusing on the imagery of the elephant and castle, and adding in a surrealist element of the trunk transforming into a path, or the River Leven. I’ll let the viewer decide.
“The second was of a footballer scoring a goal, you see the ball move through space and time, scoring a goal before then becoming the sun rising behind Dumbarton Castle. The symbolism of the sun rising was included in both murals as it directly related to the club.
“The return of the club’s original old gold was a welcomed addition to the murals, black and gold are striking colours, and I included many shades of gold in the murals as I layered paint to create texture.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the club’s new direction and community outreach, bringing art and colour to the stadium.”
Dumbarton FC vice-chair and DFC Community Trust trustee Colin Hosie added: “The club and Community Trust were delighted to work with Lewis to create a more vibrant concourse and help to promote a talented local artist at the same time.
“We are delighted at how it has turned out and look forward to supporting many more local initiatives.”
