DUMBARTON were able to try new tactical options in their second pre-season friendly today, at home to Championship side Morton.
The match ended in a 2-1 win for the men from Greenock.
It was the Sons players’ first experience of a match at the C&G Systems Stadium in over six months, although they have trained there in recent weeks.
By and large, it was the same squad who defeated Clydebank 4-0 in the first friendly match on Tuesday evening.
Sam Wardrop was the only signed player not to feature, left out as a precaution after taking a knock. Three of Tuesday’s four trialists also figured again, with the fourth absent due to illness.
The scoring was opened just after the midway point in the first half when Denny Johnstone grabbed his third goal in two warm-up fixtures, slotting past the onrushing goalkeeper.
The lead was maintained through to half time, but 10 minutes into the second half Morton levelled from the penalty spot.
Changes were then made by Dumbarton, with all four substitutes being brought off the bench at various points in the second half.
On 65 minutes Morton were awarded another penalty, which they again converted to lead 2-1.
That was how the scoreline stayed as Sons got another important 90 minutes in the tank as the new season draws nearer.
Dumbarton will continue to play friendly matches in the build-up to season 2020/21, which is due to start at home to Dunfermline Athletic in the Betfred Cup on Tuesday, October 6.
All friendly matches are being played strictly behind closed doors and details of each game will only be published after it has been played.
