We’re delighted to announce the signing of Somalia international Ali Omar on a deal until the end of the season.
The 26-year-old central defender, who has been capped seven times for his country in the last year, joins from English National League South side Farnborough on a deal until the end of the season – and will be available for today’s match with Elgin City.
London-born Ali started his career with QPR before moving into non-league football with Tower Hamlets. His performances in East London caught the eye of EFL Championship side Barnsley and he went on to captain the Tykes’ under-23s side.
In July 2021, Ali signed for Torquay United in The National League, playing 51 times over two seasons.
Moves to Northern Irish Premiership Champions Larne and then back to English football with Farnborough followed, with Ali earning his first Somalia call-up in March of last year – playing 90 minutes in all six of their recent FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Now Ali, who has moved to Dumbarton, has inked a deal to start his journey in Scottish football at the Marbill Coaches Stadium.
Boss Frank McKeown said: “Getting a player of Ali’s calibre is a real credit to everyone involved with Dumbarton. We have had to work really hard with our contacts in England to get this one over the line and I’m delighted Ali has now joined us. He knows what’s required to show Scottish football what he can do, but already he has shown his quality in training and it’s evident he will be a real asset to us in the coming months.
“He is the type of character we want in this dressing room, a captain, an organiser and I’m confident he’ll be a big player for us. We’re excited to work with him and help him kick on in his career.”
