A-Z: ROSS FORBES

Tuesday 23rd February 2021

MIDFIELDER Ross Forbes is in the hot seat for our fourth player A-Z to give our fans an insight into our players’ lives in and out of football.

In his third full spell with the club, Ross is closing in on 100 games in a Sons shirt – exactly when he might reach that depends on when football resumes.

He’s given us some real magic moments during a career which began in 2009, which you’ll see he harbours fond recollections of.

Many thanks to Ross for taking the time to answer our questions and hopefully it won’t be too long before you can continue to move towards 100 games for Sons.

Enjoy reading what he had to say.

——————————–

Ambitions – Do you have any remaining ones in football?

To be part of a successful team. Hopefully that can be with Dumbarton.

Booze – What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen on a football team night out?

Can’t be telling stories from team nights out.

Champions – What are your memories of winning the Third Division title with Dumbarton in 2009?

I have great memories from that. We had a really good team with of players who should have been playing at a higher level. Also, the manager Jim Chapman was brilliant. It was great for me personally to play every week in a winning team and go back to Motherwell with that experience.

Dumbarton – How are you enjoying life with the club and how challenging are the current circumstances?

I love it at Dumbarton – probably why I have signed for the club three times. It’s not very good at the moment not being able to play but hopefully it changes quickly.

Euro 2021 – Who do you think will win it and why?

I will go for France as their squad is probably the best right now. I seen somewhere they have about 4 players for each position which is unbelievable for the manager to pick from.

Fans – Has played behind closed doors made you wish that they could be in the stadium? What would be your message to them?

Yes definitely. Football without the fans is rubbish. I think we could get them fitted into the stadiums with social distancing in place at least. Hopefully this isn’t too far away.

Goals – What’s the best one you’ve scored?

Probably the goal I scored on my SPL debut for Motherwell away to St Johnstone.

Holidays – What’s your favourite destination?

I really like going to Portugal. Been a few times now and no doubt be back at again at some point.

Injuries – Ever had any particularly nasty ones?

When I was 18 I broke my leg in a reserve game at Rugby Park. I was a sub and came on after one minute for my mate Kenny Connolly who also broke his leg. I only lasted 35 minutes before I was off with the same injury.

Jim Duffy – What do you feel you’ve gained from working with the Sons boss?

I’ve gained so much working with the gaffer. Probably playing the best football of my career under him as well at Morton. Hes a great coach and an even better guy.

Knowledge – Who’s the most intelligent player you’ve played alongside?

Big Robert Jones comes across pretty intelligent. He said he has a few degrees but if you saw him trying to figure out a passing drill you would think he’s telling lies about the degrees.

Laugh Out Loud – Ever had any embarrassing moments in football?

At Motherwell I came on as a sub away to Inverness after 10 minutes. By 75 I was back off after getting the run around from Andrew Shinnie. Never nice being sub subbed but it was deserved.

Motherwell 6-6 Hibernian – What was it like to play in and watch that game in 2010?

It was a great game from start to finish. I’m sure we needed a point to make the Europa League places so when I missed a penalty to make it 6-6 I thought I had blown it. Thankfully Lukas Jutkiewicz saved the best goal till last to get the point we needed.

Nou Camp – What’s the best stadium you’ve played in?

Ibrox, Parkhead and Hampden have been amazing to play in. Three huge stadiums that you grow up watching on TV and I have been lucky enough to play at all three.

Outrageous – What’s the biggest fashion disaster you’ve seen on one of your team-mates, past or present?

No comment! Too many to mention!

Patter merchants – Who are the best and worst patter merchants you’ve played alongside?

The worst are by far the Quitongo brothers. The two of them just talk absolute nonsense constantly.

Queen – Who are your favourite bands/musical artists?

I’m not really a massive music fan. I would love to see Oasis if they ever got back together but I wouldn’t go out my way to see many.

Referee – Would you consider becoming one?

No chance. Although I do think the SFA should encourage players to take it up.

Screen time – What are your favourite TV shows/movies?

My favourite TV show has got to be Entourage. Could watch it over and over again.

Time machine – If you could go back and re-live any football match, as spectator or player, which one would it be?

Probably the 6-6 game with Motherwell and Hibs. Purely so I could try and score that penalty.

Ugly – What’s the angriest scene you’ve witnessed in a dressing room after a game?

Probably myself after a manager cancelled holidays after a game one time because we drew. Needless to say, he never cancelled his holiday and went to Spain Sunday to Thursday whilst the rest of us were in running every day.

VAR – Are you a fan of it?

No, I really don’t like it. Its ruining football for me. The sooner they get rid of it the better.

Winner – You’ve also won league titles with Partick Thistle and Morton. What are your memories of each of those?

It’s great to win any league and I will always be proud of what I have achieved. I probably appreciate it more as I’ve got older and realise how difficult it is to win something. Having won three out of the four I reckon I still have time to win the Premiership to complete the collection, ha ha ha.

X Factor – What would be your karaoke song if you had to do it?

I’m not one for the karaoke, I’ll leave that to Ryan McGeever.

Young gun – How special was it to become a Scotland under-21 international in 2009?

It was great. I was lucky enough to play for Scotland from U17’s through to the U21’s. It was always something I dreamed of when I was younger so to be able to do it was brilliant.

Zidane – Who’s your all time favourite player and why?

Growing up it always Zidane and Ronaldo (R9). They 2 were amazing, but Messi is the best I’ve ever seen. I don’t think I will ever see anyone like him again.
