Saturday’s clash with Stranraer marked a significant milestone for Sons boss Stevie Farrell, as he officially reached 200 games in charge of Dumbarton.
There is a slight quirk however, with it only the gaffer’s 199th competitive match on the touchline. That’s because his first official game, against St Mirren back in July 2021, will be shown in the history-books as a 3-0 defeat to St Mirren. But Sons buffs will know that the tie didn’t actually take place.
A Covid-19 outbreak just days before the Farrell-era got underway saw Sons forced to forfeit the League Cup match, with the 3-0 defeat counting as part of the boss’s official record.
Faz, who also served as Stevie Aitken’s assistant at The Marbill Coaches Stadium for 18 months between 2015 and 2017, becomes the first Dumbarton boss since Peter McGown (1954-1959) to reach 200 games in a single stint as our manager – and now sits as the fourth longest serving boss (by games played) in our history.
Just four managers in the SPFL have been in charge for a longer spell; Spartans’ Dougie Samuel, Montrose boss Stewart Petrie and Livingston’s David Martindale.
